The decision to make the 2004 Irish Championship an open event was taken by the ICU Executive. It is unclear whether this continued to apply for the 2005 and 2006 Championships. Only one non-Irish player competed in those two years, and he may have been eligible on residency. I have taken the view that they were not open events. However at the 2006 ICU AGM a motion was passed in the following terms:
“That the Irish Senior Championship be an Open Championship from 2007 onwards with the highest placed player or players eligible to represent Ireland being awarded the title of ‘Irish Senior Champion’”

At the 2012 ICU AGM the decision was made that players would have to be Irish-registered with FIDE to be eligible to compete in the Irish Championship. Ironically this eligibility condition was probably stricter than it had been before 2004. From 2013 the Championship therefore returned to being a closed event.
