Irish Women’s Championship

The first Irish Ladies Championship (as it was then called) was held in 1953 during the Irish Championship Congress in Galway. Three further standalone events were held before the first series ended.

The Championship was revived in 1968 at the Irish Championship Congress in Dublin and continued annually until 1973 after which it was held intermittently. This second series of ten tournaments ended in 1982.

A further revival occurred in 2010 as part of the ICU Dun Laoghaire International Festival. After a year’s break there was a further renewal at the Kilkenny Congress and in the following two years the event was part of the Irish Championship Congress.

(Doolan originally declared winner on tie-break. There was a protest by the Ulster Chess Union on behalf of Chater in relation to the Controller allowing a medical adjournment (and then a postponement) to Doolan in her final round game against Nugent. This was referred to FIDE and the Controller’s decision was upheld. A further protest from the UCU about the tie-break was however upheld by the ICU and a play-off ordered. However a proposal by the Leinster Chess Union on behalf of Doolan that the title should be shared was accepted.)
