Irish Inter-University Individual Championship

The Irish Inter-University Championships (commonly referred to as the Intervarsity) commenced in 1948. For many years both Individual and Team competitions were held alongside each other. The more important of the two Championships to the competing Universities was probably the team event but winners of the individual event include Irish champions Vincent Maher and Noel Mulcahy. The Individual Championship seems to have been discontinued after 1970 although the Team event continued into the 1980s before running out of steam. The Intervarsity had a number of revivals, all as team events, but for the most recent one in 2016 instead an Individual Rapidplay Championship was reintroduced.
