Armstrong Cup

W. Armstrong presented a Cup to be competed for annually by teams selected from Dublin chess clubs. The first season of competition was 1888-1889. The competition is now, and has been for a considerable time, played for by teams throughout Leinster.

The 1914-1915 season competition seems to be the last before the Great War brought an end to competitive chess. Killane in Irish Independent (1980) implies that the Cup has no winners inscribed 1916-1921. Best contemporary evidence [which seems to corroborate Killane] appears to be Irish Times report of 17 December 1921 stating: “The Armstrong Cup competition, which had not taken place for several years owing to the war, has this year been resumed…”

  3. Thought a summary would be useful; I make it –

    32 – Dublin
    17 – Sackville
    10 – Rathmines
    7 – Kevin Barry, Phibsboro
    6 – UCD
5 – Booterstown (Blackrock), Dublin University
    4 – Collegians, Eoghan Ruadh
    3 – Clontarf, Colmcille, Crumlin
    2 – Bray, Raheny
1 – City, Dundrum, Elm Mount, Kilkenny, Kingstown, Phoenix, Rathfarnham, St Benildus

I don’t know if any of those clubs are the same, just under a different name though. Dundrum and St Benildus merged, but the Armstrong wins should probably be shown separately.

What happened Kevin Barry club that they disbanded?

    Great site though; fair play!

  5. Trinity won in 2013/2014 so we are now level with UCD!
